's not on the offensive. he's on the defensive. >> bill: yeah. >> caller: with these republicans, you got to stay on the offensive. >> bill: absolutely. >> caller: come out with lie after lie after lie. and they're going to do it until it almost makes you believe the lie until you fact check. out on the stand he wasn't prepared. wait a minute. he had -- american people have voted him ahead of romney so far. so how could you get there and i hate to say it and just stumble like this? >> bill: you're not the first one to use the word stumble. glen said that in pretty -- in politico this morning. maybe he felt -- look, this thing's in the bag. i'm not going to blow it. by getting too assertive and too aggressive here but uh-huh. this thing ain't in the bag. far from it. not at all. and for millions of people last night, you know, we're into this all the time. okay? you and i. we do that every day. we do it for three hours every day. on radio and on television. so we're into all of these -- a lot of people watching last night

aggressive and prepared and put the president on the defensive for much of the 90 minutes. >> president obama and mitt romney went head to head. the candidates boiled down their economic arguments. >> governor romney has a perspective that says if we cut taxes skewed towards the wealthy and roll back regulations that we will be better off. i have got a different view. >> the president has a view very similar to the view he d when ran four years guy. if you will, trickle down government would work. that is not the right answer for america. >> romney's comments about the 47% have take and toll on his campaign even before the leaked video polls showed that americans thought he favored the wealthy over the middle class. tonight he clearly wanted to try and change that perception. >> the people having a hard time right now are middle income americans. under the president's policies, middle income americans have been buried. they are beg crusd. i ll not und a circstances ise tas on middle iome filie >> rorr: the president said his rival doesn't have the right solutions and romney cannot keep hisg t

are trying to divide americans 47%. you don't believe they are worthy. it seems to me fairly powerful defense saying wait a minute. taking my remarks out of context. you said this about race. you said this about wealthy people. no, yes? is that a shield he should use? i don't think mitt romney should bring up anything with race. he should clarify 47% remark. i think because tonight is really about trying to get back some of that small lead that the president has and trying to close that gap in the polls that the president is leading by right now. that is what mitt romney needs to accomplish tonight with the people watching. those that are already going to vote for mitt romney and those especially in the african-american community with approximately 90% lead by the president are going to vote for the president. i think it will be political suicide. i think it would be disaster. it doesn't help likability. >> bill: i'm a lonely guy tonight. everybody disagree. rove says oh, no, no, no. i would do it. i would do it if i were romney. i wouldn't bring it up say, you know, like right out of the box
